Kenyans have been sending condolence notes to Rudisha’s family after the loss of the father of the much-celebrated athlete David Rudisha.
Although most Kenyans know his son, Daniel Rudisha was also a champion in his own capacity.
He shot into fame in the year of 1968 during Olympics competition which saw him win a silver medal in 4×400 meters relay race.
Accompanied by his colleagues Charles Asati, Hezekiah Nyamao, and the late Naftali Bon made the whole world realize Kenya’s prowess in athletics during the Mexico Olympic Games.
This was just the beginning as they were to go a step ahead and win a gold medal four years later in Germany.
This was not only the first gold medal in 4x400m relay but also a first in the whole of Africa continent.
He is praised to be among the first athletes to represent Kenya and put our country in the global scale, not for monetary gains but because he loved the sport.
He served as an inspiration to many including the Konchella brothers( Billy and the late Patrick) with Billy going ahead to win two 800m world titles.
The athletics community and Kenya, in general, mourns the death of this great sportsman who has left a great legacy in the country and his son David Rudisha continues to take after him.
