Thomas was born on 7th August 1942 in Hugo, Oklahoma, in the United States. His parents are Vernon Thomas (father) and Geneva Thomas (mother). Later, his family relocated to Houston, Texas, where he was raised.

His father was an alcoholic and an extreme lover of music, especially country songs. He has two siblings, a sister Judy Thomas and a brother Jerry Thomas. After his elementary studies, he joined Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg.

He broadened his musical horizons by listening to various genres such as soul, gospel, and rock while still a young boy. Some of his favourite artists were Mahalia Jackson, Jackie Wilson, and Little Richards. He also sang in the choir as a teenager.

In the early 1960s, the band took part in several Battle of the Bands events. In 1966, The Traits and the Triumphs released their debut album; I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, via Pacemaker Records. The album featured a hit cover of the Hank Williams song I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.

The hit sold more than a million copies and was also awarded a gold disc. Later, Thomas released a solo album of the same title, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, via the Scepter Records label. However, he rose to prominence in 1968 after the album, The Eyes of a New York Woman.

Thomas released a pop song, Hooked on a Feeling, featuring Reggie Young’s electric sitar. The song was released on the album titled, On My Way. Hooked on a Feeling became his second million-selling record.
