Businesswoman Agnes Kagure’s bid to become Nairobi governor in 2022 has received a significant boost after boda boda association leaders threw weight behind her.
Kagure, who declared her interest in the city’s top seat recently, has been gaining tremendous support across the capital and has emerged as one of the top contenders for the gubernatorial seat.
On Thursday, November 18, she hosted leaders of the boda boda association in her office and deliberated on several issues affecting their members and how they could be solved.

“The Bodaboda industry is a life-saver for many Nairobians and when fully embraced by a listening administration, can work wonders to the benefit of wananchi. Had a fruitful engagement with Messrs Aggrey Vunyoli and Michael Kimani from the United Bodaboda Association. They assured me of the industry’s willingness to work with me and those who share in a vision of a prosperous and inclusive Nairobi. Come, let us work together and be the architects of our desired Nairobi. We can do it,” said Kagure.
Among the issues the outspoken city businesswoman has vowed to deal with if elected governor include crashing the cartel network at City Hall, fixing water shortages in Nairobi’s informal settlements, improving health care and fostering women and youth empowerment.

Set up clear structures
On November 11, Kagure engaged youth groups from Nairobi, Mt Kenya and Nyanza regions on empowerment and job creation.
She noted that previous regimes have failed to create a conducive environment for youth to venture into businesses and earn a decent living without being harassed and frustrated by punitive policies.
Kagure vowed to set up clear structures to address challenges of unemployment among the youth in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
“Existing records place hawkers to be around 50,000 in Nairobi with half of them domiciled in the CBD. They represent the true Kenyan spirit of working to earn an honest living. However, successive city administrations have failed and pushed them to a corner of desperation.
This time, we fix this once and for all by having clear establishments and structures that support and protect everyone’s businesses. Nairobi can accommodate all our ideas and hustles, and we’ll ensure it does just that,” said the businesswoman.

Kagure will face seasoned politicians like Senator Johnson Sakaja, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru.
She will be contesting on an ODM ticket and might be forced to face off with Wanyonyi in the party primaries before taking on competitors from other outfits.
Securing the support of boda boda operators means a lot to her gubernatorial bid considering they form the most significant chunk of Nairobi’s vote basket.
